On Wednesday 28 March, SSC will sign an consortium agreement with OHB System (Germany), Oerlikon (Switzerland) and LuxSpace (Luxemburg) regarding development of small commercial European telecom satellites, Small GEO. The first satellite will be delivered to the European space agency ESA. For the consortium, the frame work contract is initially worth around EUR 100 million. The contract signing will take place in Berlin.
The consortium will be lead by the main contractor OHB. SSC will be part of the systems team and be responsible for the development of the satellite's attitude control system, electrical thrusters and ground control.
The first satellite will be launched in 2010. The following satellites, probably one or two per year, will be sold to operators on the commercial market. Market analyses indicate increased demand for small telecom satellites as complements or alternatives to the big and more expensive satellites that dominate the market today. With small satellites, launches can be kept cheaper, the total investment is lower, delivery times are shorter and applications are more flexible.
