On 4 June, the ESA Symposium on European rocket and balloon programmes and related research opens in Visby on the Swedish island Gotland. This is the 18th symposium and for the fourth time, it is held in Sweden.

The European Space Agency, ESA, arranges these symposia every second year together with varying host nations. The conference provides a platform for scientists and engineers using sounding rockets and balloons for their research, and aims to advance the progress in the related scientific disciplines. Naturally, SSC's operational base Esrange Space Center will be much in focus during these four days.

This year, SSC and the Swedish National Space Board are the local arrangers. 250 participants have registered - a new record for these events.

There will also be an exhibition where several of the participating space organisations present their activities.

Participants will also have the opportunity to attend a presentation by Sweden's astronaut Christer Fuglesang, as will the 500 happy winners of a local newspaper lottery for the public.
