SSC and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) has signed a contract regarding SSC's involvement in a new Chinese meteorological satellite project. The first satellite to be launched is named FY-3A.
This contract forms an important platform for our continued activities in China, says Lars Alm, marketing manager of SSC's Satellite Operations Division. Today, China is one of the large space nations. We feel honoured that CMA have chosen our satellite station at Esrange Space Center as a long-term strategic solution. SSC's position in China is strong and we anticipate more contracts in the future, Alm says.
Dr. Zhang Wenjian, deputy administrator of CMA, says that CMA are very content with the offer made by SSC in the current contract. Dr. Wenjian says CMA based their choice of partner on SSC's technical compentence and cost efficiency and the station's beneficial geographical location.
FY-3A will be launched during spring 2008. SSC will provide services through the satellite's whole operational life. SSC's mission comprises satellite data reception, some data processing and data distribution to the customer through a ground-based optical fibre network. In course of time, FY-3A will be accompanied by another five satellites. The entire project will span over 20 years. SSC is currently discussing its possible involvement also in the coming satellites.
